In Focus 1: Kuwait Correction of Stocks with Similar Ownership

Many of the companies listed on the Kuwait Exchange (KSE) tend to be classified into groups based on their common shareholder base and /or a complex ownership structure whereby the companies in the group end up investing in each other. In this section of the MENA in Focus, we assess whether the prices of stocks in the same group tend to move together, as is commonly believed.

In Focus 2: Are Telecom Stocks Truly Defensive?

In our MENA in Focus publication on March 05, 2009, “Defensive Plays with Sector Rotation”, we concluded that telecom stocks in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region have the potential to be interesting defensive plays. To further this analysis, we have examined the performance of GCC telecom stocks during the recent bear market (between 1 October 2008 and 28 February 2009) and the subsequent bull run (between 1 March 2009 and 31 July 2009) to confirm their defensive nature.

Correlation of Weekly Returns

For the three-year period ending on 20 July 2009, we calculated the weekly returns of all stocks included in our analysis along with those of the KSE market index. We then used these weekly returns to analyze the co-movement between the group stocks. The findings are reported below.
