Trade begins to revive

The global financial crisis has sharply reversed a long period of rapid growth for international trade, one of the leading engines of global growth in recent decades. As demand from the advanced economies fell this year, export-dependent countries saw the contribution of trade to their overall growth contract sharply. Even as signs of a global recovery multiply, growth looks set to be primarily reliant on government-funded investment rather than trade. Encouragingly for the GCC, however, commodities look likely to fare better in 2010, driven by increasing demand from emerging economies and higher prices.
