Fund Manager's Comments:
The GCC markets continued their positive momentum into April with the S&P GCC Shariah index rising 4.4% for the month. This follows a strong positive performance in March, and has resulted in the GCC markets reversing their earlier Jan-Feb losses to close in positive erritory on a year to date basis. With the exception of Bahrain, all the GCC markets closed the month in black, with Kuwait (market cap weighted) being the best performing market, followed by Dubai/Abu Dhabi and Oman. First quarter earnings across the region were generally healthy with Petrochemical sector announcing very strong results on the back of robust petrochemical prices. Banks across the region were mixed with Al-Rajhi reporting flat earnings, while Islamic banks in Qatar reporting growth on a YoY basis albeit with mixed balance sheet trends. Post earnings season, potential inclusion of Qatar and UAE into the MSCI EM index, with Saudi possibly allowing direct access to foreign investors to be potential catalysts. Recent correction in oil prices in our view may not dampen sentiment, as around US$100 price per barrel remains very comfortable for government finances, while possibly putting some pressure on petrochemical prices. With two straight months of strong gains, the markets may take a breather but our outlook remains positive on GCC markets.
