The Nifty and the Sensex continued its lacklustre trend in intra-day trade.
At 2.23 pm, the Sensex was down 1.66 points (0.01 per cent) at 17,556.08 and the Nifty was down 3.25 points (0.06 per cent) at 5,317.15.
Marketmen said though trading was listless, benchmarks had not breached Friday's low despite global cues not being encouraging.
"This trend might continue in the absence of policy action from the government and it remains to be seen how long liquidity will prop up indices," said a dealer from an Indian brokerage.
Volatility was up and the India Vix was quoting at 16.54 up three per cent. HDFC, DLF, Maruti Sterlite and Bharti Airtel were the top five Nifty gainers.
Barring the realty index, all others were flat in afternoon trade.
European markets were down as the slowing Japanese economic growth increased concerns of a slowing global economy.
However, there was still hope that the US Federal Reserve would add new stimulus to boost the economy.
