Etisalat, UAE’s leading telecom operator, has partnered with Vringo, the next-generation ringtone pioneer, to launch the first video ringtone platform in the Middle East.

By way of this major collaboration between both parties, Etisalat will also result in the first carrier-led deployment of Vringo’s video and social ringtones in the Middle East.

Etisalat on Saturday also announced the launch of its new Weyak-Vringo video ringtone service for customers.

By adopting Vringo’s scalable client-server architecture, Etisalat will give its customers the ability to browse and download mobile videos, set them as ringtones and, in a first for the mobile industry, share them with other Weyak Vringo users just by calling, the company said in a statement.

The Weyak-Vringo service is available to all Etisalat customers via a monthly subscription that delivers access to Vringo’s video ringtone application, its library of over 1000 video ringtones in more than one category such as comedy, animation, sports and premium local content for the Middle Eastern market from partners like Nojoom, Melody and more, it added.

For using this service, Etisalat customers also benefit from no additional data usage charge if they use Weyak as access point while downloading and using the service.

'To subscribe to Vringo, customers should send “r Vringo” to 1010 and receive an SMS that will include a link to download the application for free using Weyak as the access point. Vringo subscription will cost customers Dh6 ($1.63) per month with one free video that will be preloaded and each new Video will cost Dh5,' said Khalifa Al Shamsi, senior VP of Marketing at Etisalat.

'Etisalat constantly strives to bring its customers easy-to-integrate, fun and exciting ways of enjoying technology and enabling them to express themselves more creatively,' he noted.

'The new video ringtone service is an innovative service that comes in direct response to our customers’ demands of personalizing their mobile phones the way they like it.'

“In addition, it gives our customers access to one of today’s most innovative and growing social-media activities: video ringtone sharing,” Al Shamsi added.

“Etisalat is a wonderful addition to our expanding family of carrier partners,” said Steve Glanz, Vringo’s senior vice president for business development.

“This agreement will allow Vringo to develop its services throughout a key region of the world—and enable Etisalat to connect with its customers through the most important pivot on the mobile device: the ringtone,” he stated.
