Aramex, a leading provider of logistics and transportation solutions, said it has joined hands with IMG Solar, a subsidiary of Jordan-based Izzat Marji Group, to open the region's largest single-rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) plant project at its new logistics facility in Dubai, UAE.

The 3.2 megawatt (MW) facility is one of the largest solar PV plants connected to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority's (Dewa) grid under its “Shams Dubai” initiative”. This comes as part of its commitment to supporting the UAE’s Clean Energy Strategy 2021 goals.

IMG Solar was the lead contractor for the project, where it was fully responsible for the design, supply of material, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the solar photovoltaic plant, said the statement from Aramex.

The installation work was carried out by Scan Electromechanical Contracting Company, it added. The project supervision was performed by Clenergize DWC, the consulting company specialising in solar PV plants.

The commissioning of the solar photovoltaic plant took place seamlessly and successfully through the distinguished support of Dewa, said the company statement.

Located at Aramex’s Logistics Facility in Dubai Logistics City, the plant uses state-of-the-art components from the most reputable manufacturers, such as JA Solar, SMA Solar Technology AG, S:Flex and Meteo Control, it stated.

The plant contains 9,000 solar panels, covering a total roof area of 38,000 sq m. The energy yield for the system is around 5 GWh per year, avoiding over 3,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year, it added.

Raji Hattar, the chief sustainability officer at Aramex, said: "We pride ourselves on being a leader in sustainability across the region, and are pleased with our partnership with IMG Solar for the second time. This PV plant will provide 60 per cent of the power needed to run our logistics facility in Dubai Logistics City for a year."

"Aramex has a commitment to reducing expenditure on power, and increasing electricity consumption from renewable sources for its operations. We are currently planning a Phase Two of this project, aimed at increasing the capacity to 7 MW upon completion," noted Hattar.

Fadi Marji, the general manager of IMG Solar, said: "Our company has executed more than 250 solar plant projects in the UAE, Jordan and Kuwait totalling at more than 30 MW, including the offering of high quality systems for Aramex, which was lined up with its renowned high standards. We are really proud of our strategic partnership with Aramex."

Last year, Aramex had partnered with Izzat Marji Group for the launch of its single-rooftop solar photovoltaic plant in Amman, Jordan. The plant generates 1.2 MW of power, providing sufficient renewable electricity to power the company’s operations in Amman.-
