Southern Province Cement Company started its business in 1978 and is a publicly listed company, based in the Abha region. SOCCO engages in the manufacturing and sale of cement and cement-related products. The company also exports its products to approximately 16 countries. The Company operates three factories in Jazan, Bisha and Al-Kunfuza. It started its business with one factory of Jazan in 1981, with a designed production capacity of 5,000 tons of clinker/day, and as a result of continuous development, it increased it up 7,550 tons/day. However, later in 1992, the company observed the increasing demands of the cement market and decided to expand the cement production by constructing a new plant on the mountainous area, in order to avoid the hilly roads and problems of delivering cement in those areas. The area of Al-Mahawi in Bisha, was chosen for the new plant, because of its geological location and availability of good economical quantity of limestone in the area. For this purpose, a contract was signed with a Korean company named HALA, and a joint venture was made with the Fuller Company from USA, to build aplant with designed capacity of 1.2 million tons/year. Production in Bisha Plant began on 1st April 1997.Later, the management of the company took the decision to go for a3rd Cement Plant (the Tahamah Plant), and after a thorough research on the availability of limestone and a study of the areas,it was decided that they would start the 3rd cement plant at Al-Aradiah Al-Janoubiah in the Makkan region, with a proposed capacity of 5,000 ton/day, which went up to 6,000 ton/day after further developments.
