Indian markets opened the session marginally in the green on buying by funds and retail investors in select stocks amid firm Asian cues.

At 9.15 a.m., the 30-share BSE index Sensex was up 58.16 points or 0.28 per cent at 21,201.17 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was up 24.9 points or 0.4 per cent at 6,316.

Asian stocks outside Japan rose, with a regional gauge extending gains into a third day as energy shares advanced. Tokyo market is shut for the rest of the week.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.23 per cent, but hardly changed from where it begun the year. Tokyo market is shut for the rest of the week.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index added 0.1 per cent,. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 0.5 per cent, Singapore’s Straits Times Index added 0.3 per cent, Taiwan’s Taiex Index was little changed and New Zealand’s NZX 50 Index slid 0.7 per cent.

Markets in Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam are closed.
