Activities
Muscat City Desalination Company (MCDC) plays a pivotal role in addressing the water needs of Muscat, the capital city of Oman. With its strategic location in North Ghubrah, MCDC operates the Al Ghubrah Independent Water Project, a Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) plant.
This facility has a significant contracted capacity of 191,000 cubic meters per day, which is essential for meeting the city's growing demand for potable water. The plant, which has been operational since February 19, 2016, is a testament to Oman's commitment to sustainable water resource management.
The development of such desalination projects is crucial, especially considering Oman's arid climate and the increasing water demand due to population growth and economic development.
The plant's establishment under a Build, Own, Operate (BOO) scheme allows for operational flexibility beyond the initial Water Purchase Agreement term, highlighting the long-term planning and investment in the region's water security.
Moreover, MCDC's public listing on the Muscat Stock Exchange since January 2, 2018, reflects its transparent and forward-thinking approach. The shareholders and management of MCDC, including major entities like Malakoff Corporation Berhad, have shown a strong commitment to expanding their footprint in the Middle East & North African (MENA) region, recognizing the critical importance of water desalination in these rapidly developing areas.
