Saudi Arabian Fertilizer Company (SAFCO) was founded on 7th September 1965, and is headquartered in Jubail Industrial City. SAFCO is the first petrochemical company in the country, and it was established as a joint venture between the Government and the citizens of Saudi Arabia. Based in Dammam, the firm runs a fertilizer manufacturing operation that produces chemicals including ammonia, urea, sulfuric acid and melamine, a product used to make gum and paint. The company produces urea, which is used industrially as a nitrogen fertilizer, to produce urea-formaldehyde resin, melamine, and acrylate plastic. It also produces ammonia, which is used in various industries, for e.g., in the production of nitrogen fertilizer; in the manufacture of acrylonitrile, caprolactam, and explosive grade ammonia nitrate; in tanneries, textile, dyeing, metallurgy, pulp, paper, detergent, petroleum refining, and refrigerant industries. It is one of the world's largest producers of urea and ammonia, with an annual urea production capacity of over 2.6 million tons per annum (tpa), and 2.3 million tpa of ammonia production. The company also produces sulfuric acid and melamine. It is also involved in acquiring, establishing, and operating chemical and non-chemical factories for chemical expansion. The company aims to produce, process, and market all kinds of fertilizers for the local and international markets.
