Oman's ambitious Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) is expected to bring in massive socio-economic benefits to the country, when it becomes operational.
A socio-economic impact assessment study conducted by Booz & Company indicated that the convention centre will attract 600,000 visitors per year, out of which 490,000 will be from outside the country.
Further, the project will contribute OMR200-240 million to the gross domestic product per annum by 2030, which will be one-third of the tourism related revenue, said Ahmed ElHassan, senior director, project management of Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran), which is developing OCEC.
"We also expect 18,000 direct and indirect jobs and one-third of them are going to be nationals," he added.
The local business will also benefit immensely from the development. "During the development, we are trying to spend as much as we can within Oman. Almost 50 per cent of the money will be spent in Oman."
